Information on cookies

This website, owned by ActionAid International Italia Onlus (“ActionAid”) – data controller (art. 4, par. 7, GDPR: “the natural or legal person, public authority, agency or other body which, alone or jointly with others, determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data”) as per Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27th April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation(“GDPR”) uses cookies, and similar technology. This notice provides you with information about how we use cookies and how you can control them. Cookies will be used in combination with other information that ActionAid stores in its filing systems (art. 4, par. 6, GDPR: “any structured set of personal data which are accessible according to specific criteria, whether centralised, decentralised or dispersed on a functional or geographical basis”), collected directly or indirectly, and that allow the customization of promotional communications and services according to your interests and preferences.

This notice about cookies and their management methods have been adopted to comply with the Guidelines on cookies and other tracking technologies, which have been issued by the Italian Data Protection Authority on 10th of June 2021.

What is a cookie?

Cookies are information saved on the hard disk of the user’s device and are sent by the user’s browser to a Web server and concern the use of the web. As a result, they allow us to know the services, the websites that have been visited and the options that have been chosen, while browsing the Web. In other words, cookies are small files of letters and numbers that are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website, which recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device.

Therefore, this information is not provided spontaneously and directly by the user but track the user’s web browsing.

Cookies do many different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving your experience. They can also help to ensure that adverts displayed during browsing are more relevant to you and your interests, avoiding  unwelcome promotional initiatives and not in line with your needs.

When browsing a website, users may receive on their device cookies that are sent from a different website or server (“third party cookies”), containing elements (e.g. images, maps, sounds, links to web pages of other domains) that can be found on the same websites the user is browsing. We use two broad categories of cookies:

  • First party cookies, served directly by us to your computer. 
  • Third party cookies, served by a third party on our behalf.  We use third party cookies to help us analyse our websites and their use (as described below). 

Cookies may be distinguished into these major groups:

  1. Technical cookies are those used exclusively with a view of carrying out the transmission of a communication on an electronic communications network. This is strictly necessary to provide the user with a service requested. They are not used for further purposes and are usually installed directly by the data controller or the website manager.
    They can be grouped into:
  2. Browsing or session cookies, which allow users to navigate and use a website (e.g.: to authenticate and access reserved areas). The use of these cookies (which are not persistently stored on the user’s device and are automatically deleted when the browser is closed) is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifier data (consisting of casual numbers generated by the web server) that are needed to permit secure and efficient use of the website.
  3. Analytics cookies are similar to technical cookies insofar as they are used directly by the website manager to collect aggregate information on the number of visitors and the pattern of visits to the website. Third-party analytics cookies are the same as technical cookies insofar as at least the fourth part of the user’s IP address is concealed and only if the third party do not combine them with other cookies or information available in order to create profiles aimed at marketing and profiling activities.
  4. Functional cookies allow users to navigate according to the choices and criteria selected and help the website improve the services provided.
  5. Profiling cookies are aimed at creating users’ profiles. They are used to send ads messages in line with the preferences shown by the user while browsing the Internet. Users’ prior consent is necessary to install these cookies.

How do we use cookies?

The table below summarises how we and third parties use cookies on our website. Cookies are used to:

  1. understand the total number of visitors on our sites on an ongoing basis and the types of Internet browsers (e.g.: Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer) and operating systems (e.g. Windows or Macintosh) used by our visitors; 
  2. monitor our sites’ performance, including how visitors navigate our websites, and improve our websites. 
  3. personalise and enhance the user’s online experience; and allow user profiling for targeted promotional purposes that are customized according to the preferences and the interests expressed by the user both on this website and outside of it. These cookies will also be combined with other information available to the controllers in their own filing systems in order to create profiles for the purposes specified herein. Lastly, this category also includes the so-called “fingerprinting” (passive tracking technologies), a technique that allows to identify the user’s device through the complete or partial collection of information regarding its specific configuration. This technique can be used to achieve the same profiling purposes, which are also aimed at displaying customized behavioural advertising and analysing and monitoring of websites visitors’ behaviours. This means that the aim is to conform the types and methods of the provided services to the user’s behaviours that have been previously observed. This technique is not known to the user, because it makes use of a reading technique that does not entail the storage of information within the user’s device, but the mere observation of the configurations that distinguish it making it identifiable. The outcome of this process is the creation of a “profile” that remains only available to the first or third party that manages it. The user has no tools to deny consent except by addressing the first or third party directly

Use of the user’s IP address

Our servers automatically collect the user’s IP address. This information is collected merely to track acceptance of or objection to the installation of cookies when you access the website.

Technology similar to cookies

We use technology similar to cookies, including local shared objects (also known as “flash cookies”), the analysis of the browser history, the browsers’ fingerprints and pixel tags (also known as “web beacon”). This gives us and our providers information on how our website and its content are used by visitors and allows us to identify whether a computer or device visited our sites or other websites in the past.

Our servers automatically collect the user’s IP address; therefore, we may associate this address with your domain name or that of your Internet provider. We may also collect some “clickstream data” on the use of the website. Clickstream data include, by way of example, information on the user’s computer or device, the browser and the operating system and its settings, the referring page, the pages and the contents that have been viewed or clicked during the visit, in addition to the timing and modalities of such operations, the downloaded items, the website that has been visited after ours and any search term entered on our website or on a redirection site.

How to control and delete cookies

You can choose whether or not to accept cookies. Here information on how to exercise this right. However, if you choose to reject cookies, you might not use all the functionalities of this website and if you have consented to profiling on other occasions, the communications you receive might not be relevant to your interests. It should also be noted that if you choose to manage your cookie preferences, we will place a cookie on your device to allow us to respect your preferences.

The deletion or removal of cookies from the user device also involves the removal of the cookie related to preferences; these choices must therefore be made again.

You can block cookies by using the links in the table above. Alternatively, you can also change your browser settings so that cookies from our website cannot be placed on your computer or mobile device. In order to do this, follow the instructions provided by your browser (usually located within the “Help”, “Tools” or “Edit” facility). Disabling a cookie or category of cookies does not delete the cookie from your browser.  You will need to do this yourself through your browser.

Closing the banner

If you choose to close the banner using the X button on the upper right side, the default settings will be kept. Those settings do not allow the use of cookies or similar tracking tools other than the technical ones. This means that you will not be subject to profiling.

Previously set cookies

If you have disabled one or more cookies, we will still be able to use information collected prior such disabling by means of preferences. However, from that moment, we will stop using the disabled cookies to collect further information.

Other useful information

At any time, you have the option to modify your choices regarding cookies by accessing the link cookie policy in the footer bar of the web page. The cookie banner will no longer be shown to you on your subsequent visits to the website unless:

  1. ActionAid has made substantial changes regarding its policy on cookies
  2. Provisions of law which requires to repropose the cookie banner  
  3. Six months have elapsed since the user’s last visit
