Objective of the project

To contribute to stop on-going violations of human rights of migrants on the island of Lampedusa

Context analysis

The Italian island of Lampedusa hosts one of the few national hotspots that were built to manage the inflow of foreigner people arriving through the Mediterranean sea. In January 2017 and March 2018, the Guarantor for the rights of persons detained or deprived of personal freedom pointed out that human rights of people hosted within the hotspot continue to be violated. Material and sanitary conditions of hundreds of people are reported to be extremely poor. There is no canteen and asylum seekers need to have lunch in a overcrowded room or outside, sanitary facilities have not any door, mattresses are dirty, food is of poor quality, women and children live in promiscuity with adult men. Access to legal assistance is very limited and many asylum seekers face obstacles in submitting their request for international protection. Many Italian and foreigner NGOs have left the island and there is limited coverage by the media of the quality of the reception system. All these elements result in a severe lack of transparency about the conditions of the migrants on the island.
